Just a few comments on retirees, yes we have seen a number take up the sport but from what I can gather most have been here for a while, i.e moved here to work and then retired. The success of the clubs here seems to be an overwhelming enthusiasm and friendliness towards those who turn up. I know when we get a potential new member arrive to go for a trial flight or a visiting pilot looking for a home I go out of my way to talk about what the conditions are like, big flights done, every weekend we task and fly together, the clubs tries to maintain a friendly atmosphere etc etc. Yes the weather plays a large part in Qld's success as we have continuity of flying all year. Those who attend our comps see how well the clubs work together, we all have a friendly competition amongst ourselves, who can forget the "KINGAROY" war cries and the subsequent shaking of heads from the DDSC guys. I look forward to calling up on 122.9 on Saturday enroute to my first turnpoint which is usually DDSC where I drop some bombs and try and catch up with the rest, usually 20 or more flying tasks from Kingaroy, DDSC and home.
So maybe the success is that we are all one big happy QLD club? Subject: [Aus-soaring] SE Qld Membership Demographic Wombat asked More significantly - do the new members in Queensland stay members for longer than the new members in other States? If so - why? Is this mainly influenced by the Brisbane region, I question to our SE Qld readers and I apologise if it has been answered before and I did not read it. What are the demographics of the new members in SE Qld? Are you seeing some of the cashed up southern state retirees moving north looking for a new lifestyle and discovering gliding? SDF
