Its on www.avweb.com You can read more at the site of the people doing it.The problem isn't sharing thermals it is that you could put this thing in one of our sailplanes to advise the pilot as to suggested best courses of action. It will be interesting how good it is and of course it could gather data while a human pilot flys and "learn". That way you could have an AI (artificial intelligence) in every cockpit with the skills and experience of world champion soaring pilots. Next questions is : Is this desirable? Then again AI's are also known as "artificial stupids"

Looking at ground temperatures should already be possible. I have a neat infra red non contact thermometer than reads ground temps nicely. Might need a narrower field of view to work well but down low it might tell you which of the nearby paddocks is the warmest. We could end up with a little IR scanner in the nose able to point in various directions kind of like the radar in a fighter.
