Peter,
      SPOT is fine provided you have pre programmed your retrieve crew's 
phone number into the SPOT server so they receive the SPOT SMS. They then
boot up their computer, hoping their wireless network has coverage where
they are so they can retrieve the email and look at Google earth. Then of
course they need a printer to print the Google Map and the Google Map how to
find you instructions. 

On my last out-landing I had all the gear, Next G phone, SPOT, Tracplus, in
car GPS nav, UHF CB etc etc; did the retrieve crew use any of it No, they
simply followed the instructions proved to me by the farmer - and it worked!

"Spot" and sat-navs make these books redundant and no need to find a 
farmer. :-)
