And she is still pretty cute too, although the brunette varies in colour
from time to time

Worth looking out for the cute brunette in the Aussie team!
Anyone who has ever been to Narromine has met her!

Hi Gary,
the film was first shown on the ABC just after the world
comps at Waikerie in 1974 - I certainly remember the fascination in the
gliding community at the time. About 8 years later whilst working in
Melbourne, I became interested in seeing if I could get a copy. After much
research and countless phone calls, I found that one of the glinding clubs
had a copy - I think it was the Federation in Canberra. I was able to
borrow the print from them and had it transferred to VHS.

In terms of its quality - the voice suffered to some extent in the transfer
but the vision is quite good. I think with some base removal and processing
that the voice could be improved, but I will leave that to others. I
watched the film as it transferred from VHS to DVD last night, and wow did
it bring back memories. I have a copy of both Moffatt's and Riechman's
books, so I dragged those out again. Moffatt, in his book, gives a "behind
the scenes" account of the competition - once again fascinating after having
seen the film to see him striding confidently through the briefing sessions.
Also of note in the film are the icons of the sport then - Renner,
Reichmann, Moffat, Grosse, Ax, Holighaus, not to mention one of my tug
instructers...etc. There is also a wonderful narrative by one of Moffatt's
support team on the value of women or more specifically wives during
competition and a rebuke by Alan Moffatt's wife ;-)

Regarding the Hanns Werner Grosse clip - yes it is on the DVD as well. It
is a ABC TV Capture - the quality is not too bad, but there is a short 2 sec
break half way through, other than that, it is quite good.

I will post details shortly on how to download a copy.

Alex

Hi Alex,
Very interesting!
Can you please amplify on what you initially did, and just how you got 16mm
film copied to VHS? It sounds like a good story.
Was the original 16mm film "master"in good nick, and do you still have it?
What is the quality of the VHS copy like?
Do you still have that VHS copy?
Did you copy from film to DVD, or VHS to DVD?
What is the quality of the DVD like?
Is the Hans Werner Grosse stuff on the DVD?
Phew! That is a lot of questions. Sorry.
Regards,
Gary

Hello All - I noticed in a the archives that many are still interested in
getting a copy of Zulu Romeo - Good Start. So into the basement I went and
discovered that during my uni days I managed to track down a copy of the
original 16mm film reel and got it copied to VHS.

Well, I have just copied it across to DVD format - so if anyone is
interested, please let me know and I will figure out how to get a copy out
to those that would like a copy. Maybe YouTube might be the best vehicle,
although I would prefer a central distribution. Also, on the tape is a
short documenterary, from the ABC on Hans Werner Grosse as well that travels
with him during his outback long distance attempts.

Nice application. There are a few other that have similar features, most not
designed specifically for flying. Some of the glide simulators for pocket pc
also have the feature of transmitting position built in. but...

NextG is just a brand name. the iPhone does NextG if you are with Telstra.
3G is a set of protocols and frequencies.

That said however, most of the land we fly and land on is not even covered
by NextG - it might cover 99% of the population, but I believe it only
covers about 10% of the actual ground :-)

In Australia, we really can only use Satellite phone systems for position.

Alex I would like a copy. I was mesmerized by this film when I first
started gliding.

I would certainly be interested in a translation if possible and
sufficient interest. There seems to be two separate approaches in the
article, the first just bridging some of the USB pins which apparently
converts the output to serial (rumour has it the HP31X has an inbuilt
serial port). I gather this approach switches off the extended (high rate)
charge mode of the PNA. The second approach using a TTL board I gather
maintains both. If you go ahead I would look forward to the translation.

thanks,

Hi all

If anyone really wants this translated, let me know.

It will take a day or two, but will be better than online translators. I
suspect that most online translators will not get many of the technical
words.

Ciao

Tim
