  Subject: [Aus-soaring] "Tom Iggulden reporting"

A number of people have asked me the question if Tom Iggulden is connected
with gliding Iggulden family. Yes the ABC TV and radio reporter Tom Iggulden we
hear from most nights from the riots of northern China is from the long line of
the Iggulden gliding family. In his youth I taught Tom and his brothers
gliding and he was at 1974 world comps at Waikerie (be it a baby) so he is a
4th generation glider pilot. His parents are Brett and Pru and Brett still has
a Libelle 301 in mothballs and flys these days in his Maule 235 with tow
release. Brett can be seen performing in his Jazz band up and down east coast
Australia and at Belingen selling a few upmarket lights. Brett's father was
Bill Iggulden (died some time ago) and his brother Jack were responsible for
the early writing of our Manual of Standard Procedures and the instructors
manual. In those days it was all on stencils and printed with black ink all
over you. I think when Edmond Schneider first came to Australia the family
lived under Jacks house in Melbourne.

Jack is still going at about 90- the brain is OK but the body bungees have
failed. He still declares he is one of the few people who really knows the
history of gliding in AUS and he will tell the full story when a few people
die!!!! Jack has written many books over the years and gather there was
another not so long ago. Jack and Bill's sister was Grace who died recently.
She was married to Fred Hoinville and I think it would be true to say she wrote
Fred's book "the clouded Sky". Then there is more history involving the olly
"the yellow witch". I gather grandfather Iggulden was a glider pilot also thus
Tom is a 4th generation glider pilot.

The stories associated with Brett and outlandings etc are a true legend in
Australian Gliding - whether it be walking along a road near Warwick with no
pants on so as to make sure Prue would stop or saying he was the health
inspector at some small town Greek Cafe.

Anyhow a little Gliding history for all and when you hear "Tom Iggulden
reporting" it means a bit more..
