Hi folks Those of us interested in weather and forecasting might well be interested in a read of this:- http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg20427335.600-tomorrows-weather-cloudy-with-a-chance-of-fractals.htmlThe article investigates new evidence that weather is a set of cascading fractals ranging from scales of a kilometre or less out to the scale of the planet. This offers the possibility of improved accuracy in forecasting without grossly increasing their computational intensity: using fractal modelling it appears likely that the problem of forecast inaccuracies due to parameterisation ("smearing" of values) inside the cells of the forecasting grid can be significantly reduced. Interestingly, this idea also suggests ways to check the current computer models themselves: if this research is right, our best atmospheric models should demonstrate this fractal cascade effect. It turns out that they do... -- Robert Hart [email protected] +61 (0)438 385 533 http://www.hart.wattle.id.au |
