When I first read Peter's post it brought back memories from the late 80's
when fax machines were just becoming readably
available and pilots wanted to submit their Flight Plans by fax; at that
time there was a group of dinosaurs within Dept of
Aviation/AsA (which ever we were at the time) that strongly resisted using
this new technology for operational applications;
fortunately common sense and the industry won and fax communications was
quickly adopted.
I am also pleased to read Dave's post, I also remember that Boyd Moody was a
young Flight Service Officer back in the days I have
just recalled; he has been round long enough to have a sense of history when
it comes to these things. Like Cath I use the NAIPS
application for iPhone application; where else can you update your weather
and Notam in less than 10 Seconds; that level of convenience
has to add to safety.
The NAIPS system has been with us since the early 90's and it has matured
from something that was so unfriendly and unreliable to use that
a past President of the AOPA once told me that the acronym stood for "Not
Actually Intended to Provide a Service" into something that is very
useful particularly with the access to mobile communications most of us
enjoy today.

I just emailed Boyd Moody who is the AusFIC Group Leader - Data; Australian
Flight Information Centre (AusFIC) at Air Services Australia, who says that
the developer has an agreement with AsA for the program and NAIPS access.
The tool will allow a flight plan to be submitted and this is highly
desirable. So the answer is 'yes', get the app and use it! And this is from
the guy who co-ordinates all of this stuff for Australia.
For PeterS, I suspect the issue is that you're trying to access NAIPS by web
on your phone, rather than running an app over the IPhone.

I used my iPhone once to file a flight plan on the ground at Cobar. It
worked well.
Does this mean they now deny you the ability to do that or just say they
don't want you to?
