With all due respect Emilis but what you call perfectly satisfactory hardware is considered scrap metal by others. The most modern piece of hardware on offer in the recent posts is an ASK 21, which is just a ASK 13 in fibre glass, i.e. a 40 plus year old design and actually 30 years old. No wonder clubs are not queuing up to spend their limited cash on them. It's not unhealthy at all to want something a little more of todays equipment rather than vintage.

The direct lineage of the ASK21 goes back K13 - K7- K2. Mid 1950s I think.

I find the enthusiasm for the ASK21 difficult to fathom. It performs about like the much derided PW5. I've flown both.

The gliding movement really ought to aim for something better in 2010. Duo Discus or better is about the level I think.

You don't need basic trainers. Learn to fly in a Tecnam, Jabiru, Skystar etc and convert to gliding with a dozen or so launches and a few hours in a Duo.

As Emilis has said the cross country/competition part of gliding is going well. The rest of it just isn't very attractive to anyone as shown by the 1000 a year turnover. Pity the organisation(for want of a better term) seems to be stuck in about 1955 and is keen to continue to flog that particular dead horse. Ancient gliders flown by ancient instructors using ancient launch methods with an organisational authoritarian mindset isn't where it is at.
