All good questions, Michael.

An even better one before getting involved in the minutae of calculating a carbon footprint is: do we care and why?

Sorry, this gets even more OT
or maybe not.

I am told by people in white coats who look at the inner top part of humans, that our drives are sequentially -
- to meet basic survival needs
- then to be contented
- then to do things that extend ourselves
- then do things that connect us and contribute to society
(in ascending order of drive).

So, beyond sitting in front of the 60" plasma, some people -
- go fly gliders for their own pleasure
- or to extend their capabilities
- or instruct, fix airframes, sit on committees, promote the sport , etc....

In the 'green' sector, similarly there are people
- making a buck
- looking for 'better' ways
- looking for 'cuter' ways
- contributing to changing the world
(from their perspective anyway)

There are better forums than aus-soaring to discuss in detail the differences between
- the envisaged 'green' fully functioning future
- the 'toward a sustainable future' flawed actions we undertake now
- the remnant old style thinking technologies which are left now, with which we can make the switch as these are used up
- entropy and the place of humans

key words on your favourite search engine -
- cradle-to-cradle
- Bruntland
- zero carbon, carbon credit, etc.
