It depends on how high up you can get before cloud forms around you. And how far ahead of the gust front the lift was. If you rode this, you may have ended up over the sea south of Albany. > Better to be at 10000' or 50km away than trying to land in a gust front.
Agreed, landing during the gust front would have been likely fatal...
