Hi

Many of us would be aware of the Perlan project started by Steve Fosset before his untimely death, which aims to soar to 90,000ft using stratosphereic mountain waves and the polar vortex (see http://www.perlanproject.com/)

NASA recently captured a glimpse of (north) polar stratospheric clouds at around 100,000ft - see

Apart from the incredible thought of soaring a glider to the edge of space, this particular instance is interesting as the Perlan project has previously concentrated on the southern polar vortex and the waves generated there. It's clear this effect also occurs in the northern hemisphere - I don't know if stratospheric waves are more common in the southern vortex than the northern one...I am still looking for data on this.
