I suggested that here a while ago, Alan as a result of a conversation with my colleague Adrian Jansen whose son used to install mobile phone systems on Pacific islands for a while.

There was some vague arm waving from some about why it couldn't be done. Didn't seem convincing.

But why not have an airborne SAR system that interrogates mobile phones.
Many phones could advise GPS location even. One can find Iphone/IPads
positions with currently available software provided they are within range.
Or even have the airborne system simply ring the mobile phone. They would
not even have to be in the search area, just within the radar horizon.

I have been told by crews that a mobile phone screen aimed at the aircraft
from an unlit area
stands out like a light house at distances of up to 15km or more.

But the search crews have to be in the right area to begin with.

Thanks Geoff,

Yes, a PLB attached to your parachute harness is not a bad idea even though
it isn't a requirement. The strobe is good also.
If you are prepared, your mindset is likely such that you are less likely to
need the safety gear.
