I got the below from a friend who is medical director of Careflight Qld with his thoughts on how confor foam works which may be of interest. I do know Allan is an expert at retrieving a person at scene of accident and transporting them to hospital.
Ian M Hi Macca I believe the advantage of confor type foam is that the time for the transmission of the impact to the bum/spine is increased as it deforms at a slower rate than a soft cushion. Therefore the peak pressure on the spine is less. We are talking bits of seconds here. In addition the more dense but compressible confor will also absorb some of the energy itself in the compression phase also decreasing the transmitted energy. I will look up some of the literature and get back to you. Regards Allan
