>> The ideal persons would have a background
as English teachers or journalists...

Are you sure!?! Perhaps a retired English teacher "English" has not
been taught for decades in Australian schools because it was too
difficult. 2X that for NZ. All our workers are functionally illiterate
to the point where turning on the spell checker is a waste of time
because it just gives up.

I don't know about journalists. Perhaps if you want someone to check
facts, you should avoid them.

Proof readers are good value. If you want a great proof reader, I
could suggest my wife's brother. He used to be fairly illiterate (he
went to a Steiner school) but his first job after leaving school was
proof reading for a niche publisher who specialised in pictorial
literature for persons of gay persuasion.

I got him and some others to check something I wrote… the best that
anyone else could come up with was about 8 mistakes… he came up with
something like 58 mistakes.

But proof reading is not the same as checking style and meaning. If
you have read Gliding International or a recent Italian book on
sailplane design, you would see that proof reading, spell checking and
getting the meaning correct, clear and understandable is a lot less
important than it used to be.

Put in a few good jokes and everyone will forgive you. Time to duck and run.
