I did reflect at the time that gliders were being built for more sinister
purposes elsewhere.
Eban Emael came to mind as the first event.

The USA at that time was one of a few countries not involved in war at that
time. The Canadians just across the border as well as Australia and most of
Europe were about to suffer the horrors of WW2. The USSR had its non aggression
pact with Germany which lasted until in suited it suited A.H., Japan was
satisfying its territorial ambitions in Korea, Manchuria and China. The USA
stayed out of it all, becoming extremely wealthy in the process, until Japan
attacked it and Germany as part of its agreement with Japan, declared war on
the USA. Having said all this, am still mighty glad we had American
manufacturing capacity, military muscle and lives to prevent Australia becoming
another Japanese colony.

WW2, while in sunny southern California people are innocently playing with
sailplanes.
