I don't think that's right. http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2012C00683 is the GFA exemption. Its only reference to instruments concerns turn and bank indicators in CAR 1998 reg 207. Minimum equipment for private VFR aircraft is in CAO 20.18 appendix 1. A compass is on the list, with no exemption for gliders. http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2012C00103 Maybe I've missed something because I haven't wanted to spend all night researching CAOs for an aus-soaring post, but I don't think so: compasses are on hue he minimum equipment list for gliders, regardless of whether they have engines.
