Isn't the main point about having a compass the fact they don't need a
power supply to work?

So if you suddenly lose your batteries for some reason, you can use a map
and compass to find where you are and just as importantly (hopefully) be
able to tell other people where to find you also...? (assuming you have
paid attention during basic navigation training which I'm sure is available
from instructors)
