Unfortunately, even 40 years ago, Kenley was closely surrounded by housing etc and although the training stressed trying to stay within the airfield boundary if the cable can't be released, that can be difficult. On one occasion, a cadet on one of his early solos had a hang up and executed the emergency procedure beautifully, earning him an AOC's commendation. --
