When they first came out I had an AVID, on the basis that the only
airports I would _need_ to go to weren't security controlled. They are a
bit sparse in SA.
Subsequently went to the ASIC for the last 4 years because I did (very)
occasionally drop into security aerodromes. (The main one being
Parafield, which is one of those weird set ups, it is a secure
aerodrome, but does not have a secure area due to no scheduled passenger
flights and the secondary one being Pt Augusta to visit my parents, one
of who has now died). In all the time I've had an ASIC no one has ever
asked to see it.
Gawler, Waikerie, Renmark, Bordertown etc, all sites that carry out
gliding and where I do (or would consider) towing are unsecure
aerodromes. (In fact, I can't think of any between Adelaide and the
NSW/Vic border). Obviously the density of secure aerodromes is greater
in the east so the chances of eg outlanding on one are a bit higher, but
still, is it all that high?
So... I'm not really sure I can say it is worth it, particularly here
in SA. Ultimately, do you really need to go to secure aerodromes, will
your life be emptier if you don't? really only you can say.
Regards
SWK

All,
Just in the process of renewing my ASIC. Cost is $200.50 for 2 years.
Cost of an AVID is $152.00 for 5 years, but you can't acess a security
controlled Australian airport with one of these.
Any comments?
John.
