Hi Gary When the Sports Committee looked at this a year ago, it was decided that a review would take place when we had a chance to review Nationals results.
There have been no record claims in the first 12 months, and following 2 Nationals, the bar seemed to be too high. The object of the exercise is to have something realistic for people to achieve, and stimulate interest in this record class. I hope this is OK with everyone! Pam p.s. there is a move to change the rules at IGC level, to remove the 1000m loss of height allowed between start and finish. That will completely change the whole picture, raising the bar way above the existing records. That sort of sweeping change seems incredible, and yet a small number of people see the 1000m loss of height as Free Energy and somehow cheating. Yet it is the rule we have used for at least 50 years. There are worse things on the horizon, and lets just get on with encouraging our pilots to put in some Australian Record Claims and even World and Continental Claims, more on that soon. Subject: Re: [Aus-soaring] Records in 20 m 2-seater class Hi Pam, As a matter of interest, I would appreciate you giving us the fine detail here. For example, exactly WHO did the review, and why a review was thought necessary. Can you please tell us the process of how "we now have arrived at a more realistic estimate". What has changed (and WHY) re the Australian Standard Class records (from 12 months ago), that was initially used as a base. Why were these used as a base anyway? Sorry, we (Grampians Soaring Club), do not run to anything like a Duo Discus (or a DG 1000), but we do have a Janus that once held the World Distance Record. Cheers, Gary From: [email protected] <mailto:[email protected]> [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Pam Sent: Saturday, 21 December 2013 9:42 PM To: Discussion of issues relating to Soaring in Australia. Subject: [Aus-soaring] Records in 20 m 2-seater class The Minimum Performances required to set Australian records in the 20m 2-seater class have been reviewed and are now considerably easier to achieve. The new list has been posted on the GFA website. When the class was introduced a year ago, the Minimum Performances were set based on the existing Australian Standard Class records at the time. Following two National Championships in this class, we have been able to make a more realistic estimate of what performances may be expected. So, polish up the club's Duo Discus and have a go!
