Some of us do keep heritage aircraft flying. Mine is 60 years old to an 80 year old design. In case you haven't heard of us, look at Vintage Gliders Australia

However, I agree that tin gliders from the former Eastern Bloc are a nightmare to maintain. We had a thread on that a while ago.
