| He's right, and it happened 30 years ago: Ah, OK, thanks - so it was originally for that purpose, but isn't needed for that any more (but is retained for back-compat, which makes sense, it is harmless, and for paren matching editors (which is a frill)). None of this has anything to do with whether aliases appearing in command substitutions ought to be processed when seeking the terminating ')' or whether it makes sense for that answer to depend upon whether the command sub was embedded within double quotes or not. kre
