If you want to have a go, how about working on the Draw Guide? Most
chapters already have index entries, but some may be incorrect and
others may be missing. You can do quite a bit before the chapters are
compiled into a book; at that point, of course, you can looks for
consistency issues that are more difficult to spot in individual files.
Chapter 12 of the Writer Guide tells how to enter and edit index
entries. It should get you started.
