Hi, Rachel! Welcome to OOA :-)

Hello! I'm writing to introduce myself and offer myself up as a volunteer for
this project. I currently work in IT as a network engineer, but have a degree
in English and very strong writing, editing, and proofreading skills. I'd like
to help out with OOo documentation both to improve my technical writing, and to
give something back in thanks for this fantastic product which I've benefited
from quite a bit. (I should add that I noticed in the archives someone
mentioned the need for indexers; I have a master's degree in library science
and did a whole class on indexing as part of my degree, but that was quite a
while ago and my skills are rusty... I might be able to polish them up with
time and help out there as well.)

I'm still wading through the information on the website and in the archives to
get a sense of where you most need help, but I'm very excited to join in!

Don't worry if you get two copies of this, because I'm sending it to the list, and directly to you (in case you aren't subscribed). Our leads, who usually welcome new hands and can check on things like subscriptions, are very busy right now; there's a lot going on. Be assured that your help will be valuable and appreciated.

Pending a more official welcome, here's a quick checklist of things you can be doing, some of which you may have done.

*Accounts*
You may need three accounts: OO.o main site, OO.o wiki, and OOA. It's wise to use the same user name for all. Some people bother with different passwords, others don't. Go to the following pages, look in the upper left for something like "Log in / Register", and follow your nose.

The main site: http://www.openoffice.org/
The wiki: http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Main_Page
OOA: http://www.oooauthors.org/english

After you set up your OOA account, you should post to the authors list, giving your user name and asking for the "author role".

*Mailing Lists*
We have two separate (but closely intertwined) projects: OO.o Documentation and OOAuthors. Each has its own list; you should subscribe to both. The easy way to do this is, after you have an account on the main site, go to the following page:
http://documentation.openoffice.org/servlets/ProjectMailingListList
After you log in there, you will be able to subscribe to the dev and the authors lists, if you haven't already.

*Wading*
Probably the best single source of info about OOA is just being written by Jean Weber. A late draft is available on the wiki:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Documentation/Dashboard/Producing_User_Guides
An ODT version is available on the OOA site, when you have author's role.

Hope you like it here! :-)
