Are you running the newest OO.o v3.3, just released?
Your "wonky" problem sounds a lot like what I call the "pied layout"
bug. I've been working on filing a bug report (it's hard to reproduce,
but all too common), but v3.3 has seemingly squashed the bug flat, at
least on my WV system.
If you're seeing this under v3.3, please send me a screen-shot
(directly, not on the list!), and I will continue my bug-filing effort.
