Ok I really must ask: Does Impress crash frequently for you. (apparently not) I'm running on WinXP service pack 2 fully updated.
When using bitmap for background and adding graphic Impress collapses.
Also graphic style changes do not carry over to other slides. NTP
How do you set a background. I have not had any issues with Impress crashing.
However, if the problem is consistent, you should file an issue. This is how bugs are tracked.

Go to <www.openoffice.org> click the Register link at the top right of of the page. Fill in your information and reply to the confirmation email that will be sent to the address you provided. Once you have confirmed, go to <www.openoffice.org> again and click on the "Bugs & Issues" link in the General links box.
