But the cover is already pretty balanced...

Let's see what others say. But my initial reaction is that I wouldn't like it. I'd
like a "clean" cover. Also, is there a chance that advertising OOoAuthors more will
make the guides come accross as less official? I mean, we are the main project
producing documentation. I know of a couple other people doing one-man efforts. But
the real community project that develops guides is us. Would it take away from that
if we put the Authors logo there?

I agree that the cover more balance than the first template page, but it would make more sense to me that the logo would go on the front of the whole book. Maybe not though.

My initial reaction is to *not* change the cover. It is great the way it is. Another logo would make it cluttered. Daniel's point about making it look less official is also good.

Without making any judgment about the clutterness, I don't think a second logo would make it seem lees official.

Some relevant comments here, that Peter and others won't know because they haven't seen the draft guides that I put together for the RegiCon in San Diego.

1) Those books had a cover (Linda's design) and an interior title page (of a different design), as do most books. We could put the OOoAuthors logo on the interior title page -- that's a common place for such a logo and I think it would look good there.

This was a distinction I tried to make in a post earlier, but failed. I agree for the most part that there will be a difference between when the docs are printed as a whole and as a individual chapter. Perhaps we could make a folder on the Authors page for suggested Chapter title pages when put into a whole book.

My concern is that most people will be viewing this chapter as standalone files, therefore the front page of the template becomes their title page, so in a way it should be treated as importantly as the Cover of the book.

I don't think that the latest iteration of the chapter title page design will look good as the title page for a full book, following immediately after the cover -- it's both too similar and too different, and I think the title page for the book should have fewer graphics. (I don't think my old draft would do, either.)

I agree that it would look bad as the cover of the book, but it was never meant to be. I also see your point about it not flowing well with the other cover.

I think, as I stated above, perhaps we need to have two sets of graphic art. A cover page if someone is making a book along with chapter title pages and also a cover for a standalone chapter (I think the current template cover would handle that well).

The overview information needed to go somewhere; the other choices were to put it on the back of the chapter title page or on the first page of the chapter itself -- the latter is not desirable, as it often changes the pagination in the chapter, which I consider highly undesirable (if not completely unacceptable).

I think the new location of the copyright info is perfect.

I'm thinking that the proposed chapter title page, while it looks good for the standalone chapters, might be too "busy" when used as chapter title pages in a full book. I definitely think it would not look good if the chapter overview information were on that page as well (even if the OOoAuthors logo were not there), so the overview info would need to go on the back of the chapter title page.

+1

This is were I think two sets of pages would work well. Although, I fear I am going to be told this is too much of hindrance to people, but the only people it will hinder are people that are going to be printing this things out and those people will be able to figure it out.

(3) When the chapters were collected into a book, all of the copyright information was summarised at the beginning, along with a full table of contents. The chapter within the book did not have individual copyright or ToC pages.

I think this is the better method, although the list of authors will be LONG!

Summary: I like the thing Daniel did with the logo as a standalone cover for a single file not collected in a book. Perhaps we can come up with another title page for a book. Why can't it just be the cover, smaller. This is not unheard of. I think in a book each chapter cover page should not be a whole page, but rather just the title of the chapter at top. What would be neat, I think, would be to put the chapter number in the circle graphic that Linda just made.

Have a good one,
