One possibility is a design with elements that can be shown on a standalone
chapter title page but hidden when the chapter is part of the full book. For
example, a standalone chapter should indicate which book it is part of (not
just the chapter number), but when a chapter is part of a book, the book name
is probably going to look silly on the title page.
Note this is a high-level concept suggestion. I don't yet have a draft
design to show you; I must confess that I'm having a hard time finding
one that does work for me for both purposes.
Oh oh oh, how about this?

This is based on Janet's edit. She added "OpenOffice.org Foobar Guide" to
the big seagull template I made. What I did was I put those lines inside a
section, which can be hidden.
I tried to make it so it'd look ok with the section both hidden and
visible.
I think this would work better if I used conditional text. But alas, I
can't remember how. Maybe you or Janet can do that?
Cheers,
I think that just might do the trick. :)
