I would find it ackward to hear of a "spreadsheet editor". A spreadsheet
is also understood to refer to the program.

I agree, "spreadsheet editor" is awkward. BTW, I didn't know spreadsheet is also understood to refer to the program, so I learned something new today. :-)

For the purpose of brainstorming, I'll propose some random, possibly
stupid ideas:

1) Drop the names of the components entirely, and have no subtitles:

2) Or perhaps make the component into the subtitle:

I think it is important to include the name of the component somewhere in the title or subtitle, because some parts of OOo use the component names to refer to things. For example, in the Help, and in Tools > Options. So one of the many variations you suggested is leading the list right now, IMO. I'll think about these and post back with my next set of suggestions, probably tomorrow.

Rick Barnes (I think it was) suggested "Presentation Graphics" for Impress, but to me that's potentially confusing to the naive. It may be technically correct, but I think of presentations as primarily words, not graphics, so my first reaction would be "that's not what I'm looking for".

As for "component", "program", "application", or whatever... IMO it's more important to use a word that naive users may understand, than to be technically accurate. Even better is avoiding all of them, of course! Sounds like we are all agreed on that.

The acronym of the day is KISS -- Keep it Short and Simple. I think we'll eventually converge on a set of titles that meets the KISS principle, so keep the ideas coming folks!

Cheers, Jean
