I know it takes awhile to become familiar with the various characrer and paragraph styles we use in our docs and they can be confusing, particularly if you're used to a different style in other work you do.

So now and then I'll post a few reminders about formatting and style for authors and reviewers. Here is today's list:

1) Although some menu items have 3 dots after them in the menu, our style is to NOT include those 3 dots in the documents. So, for example, we do NOT write "Preferences..." but instead we write "Preferences". See "Menu Paths" on page 5 of the Style Guide.

2) Highlighting: The names of windows and dialog boxes are NOT put in bold or italics. I could not find anything in our guidelines that specifically said this (although no highlighting was specified for those items), so I just added a note to the "Character styles" section of the Template How-to (page 3) making this clear.

3) The names of fields and tabs in dialog should be in the OOoEmphasis style (which displays as italics), not the OOoMenuPath style (which displays as bold).

OOoMenuPath is used for all menu paths, including context menus (from a right-click) and for button items, such as OK, Insert, Open, and so on.

See "Character styles" on page 3 of the Template How-to.

Cheers, Jean
