I'm seeking advice on the creation of a concordance file from an .odt

Is there any tool to automate this process, preferable one which
provides a GUI tool to manually cleanse the list?
It is easy to create a list of words but how does one convert this to
an .sdi file? Once one has the right format, there appears to a tool in
Writer to massage this file.
The doc
[http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors/ToC_index_biblio.pdf]
has:
Concordance file. This enables a set listing of words to be imported
(select using
the File button and then used within the index. The concordance file
has a special
file format; for further information, refer to Help > Contents.
I didn't find the Help very helpful.
Colin,
If I understand you correctly, you have a list of words in a .odt
file, and you want to turn that file into a concordance (.sdi) file
and then manage the .sdi file using a tool within Writer. Is that
correct? If so, here's what I did: I couldn't make Writer (on WinXP)
save to a filename with the extension .sdi, so I saved it as .txt and
then went into Windows Explorer and renamed the extension to .sdi.
Then when I followed the instructions in the Help for opening the
.sdi, it opened in the "Edit Concordance File" window. Or I could open
it directly in OOo just like a .odt file.
I did find that one step was missing or unclear in the Help (at least,
the instructions didn't exactly match what was happening in
OOo1.9.122). The Help says, as step 4 under "To access the Edit
Concordance File dialog":
"Click the File button, and then choose New or Edit."
In fact, the choices at that point were New or Open. I chose Open and
got an ordinary Open dialog, where I selected the .sdi file I had
created, and clicked Open.
After that, the choices on the Insert Index/Table dialog for
Concordance file "File" button were Open, New and Edit. When I clicked
Edit, the .sdi file opened in the "Edit Concordance File" window.
Does this help? Or have I misunderstood your question? BTW, I notice
that the link you gave is the one for the OOo1.1.X chapter; the
chapter for OOo2.0 is here:
http://documentation.openoffice.org/manuals/oooauthors2/0212WG-CreatingTablesOfContentsIndexesAndBibilographies.pdf
But the new chapter doesn't have much more information. I'll make a
note to consider adding a bit more information when we update the
chapter (and I should update the V1 chapter too).
Cheers, Jean
Jean,
Many thanks, I have followed your instructions and it works like a
charm, with 1.9.125. Now I have to polish my exclusion list when
building the .sdi file.
It seems that one cannot edit index entries in the Index Edit area but
that entries can readily be changed in the .sdi file itself.
The use of the "Insert" menu to edit entries seems a little anomalous
but is no real problem.
Thanks again.
