[authors] End-of-line double-space no-show feature in OOo

Has anybody experienced this persistent bug? When editing MS Word 
(perhaps, even OOo docs?) docs that have double (or triple, etc.?) 
spaces at the end of a line and at the beginning of the next line in a 
paragraph, they do not appear as spaces when viewing them with OOo. 
After viewing them in MS Word, however, these double spaces clearly are 
visible at the ends of the lines when they appear in such locations. 
Just why is this?
