Thanks for the offer. I wouldn't mind of course being the maintainer
of these two chapters, however, as Jean requested, I think the
priority is to find replacements for the zillions of chapters she was
the maintainer of, such as chapter 3 of the writer guide and a couple
of chapters of the Impress guide.
I've been taking note of a number of shortcomings of the Writer Guide
(and with Writer itself) with regard to practical use of
cross-references, bookmarks, and hyperlinks. Maybe, this might be a good
time to address all of those and suggest possible workarounds.
I have been doing the same as well as tracking the changes in the
latest version to see if there is something worth capturing in the
user guide. I am for example looking forward to the possibility of
referencing individual numbered list items, something that should come
with OOo 2.4 and that should make its way into the guide fairly
quickly (it is a rather frequently asked question on the users list).
I am also quite a keen user of Impress and I would like to document
the "true tables" feature. A developer's snapshot is available already
but in the past 2 months I have been travelling so much that I did not
have time to sit down and test it yet.
Cheers,
Michele
The Writer Guide should have more practical applications devoted to it.
For example, there should be available for a user's to download some
files which could be used for exercise. These could be similar to the
file that we use for the WG template.
And we should address those functions that Writer does and also those
that it doesn't do flawlessly. Hopefully, others can contribute their
own inputs to these files while they're being developed.
BTW, why do the cross-references of headings have an extra space at the
beginning when they're inserted in the text? Is that just a problem with
my writings or is that how Writer x-refs work, at present, on my Vista
Ultimate setup?
Also, there should be some writing about bookmarks so that they are
compatible when converted to MS Word. Word's bookmark names need to
start with an alphabetical character and cannot contain any spaces. This
item should be disclosed because Writer is not very useful when
converted to a DOC file with incompatible names, etc. Any other
migration details need to be disclosed.
A guide that doesn't cover these types of migration items is not very
useful where ODT files are routinely converted to/from DOC, for example.
It wouldn't hurt to have a list of such items parked somewhere where
anybody could keep adding to it (or them, if there are multiple lists).
And yes, OOoAuthors doesn't have many reviewers, writers, or editors...
