I reported a week ago the need to update the requirements wording for
GNU/Linux and the Kernel. I also reported here on the list something
regarding the minimum requirments as well as adding vista to the
compatibility OS.
I just wonder if the mailing list is the best way to report this errata.
The list is a good place to report errata, but not such a good place
to save that info so it can easily be found, especially by someone new
to the group. Some other possibilities are:
1) Gary set up a forum last year. It's mentioned on the first page of
the English section of the website, but has rarely been used by the
rest of us. http://technicaleditor.freeforums.org/
That could be good place to collect all the info about changes,
including links to information.
(The forum appears to be for more than OOoAuthors topics, but there is
a section for OpenOffice.org. Gary does a lot of work with MSOffice
and Framemaker and DocBook, so he's been collecting info about file
conversion problems and best practices.)
2) Collecting info on an OOo wiki page is another possibility. All the
user guides are on the OOo wiki, so people could make comments on the
discussion pages, or we could set up pages for collecting info for the
new books.
3) A third possibility is Google Documents. People could add their
info to a series of docs there, once I (or someone) sets them up...
but I believe you might need a Google account to write to them (easy
to get, but one more thing for people to do), and we might want to
limit access (to cut down on spam).
I used to keep a spreadsheet on Google Spreadsheets, as a way of
keeping track of who's working on which chapters, what stage they have
reached (review, publishing, indexing, etc), and other information. If
I create a spreadsheet for the v3.0 books, I could make readable by
anyone, and I could give write permission to those who might like to
add info to it themselves.
What do others think of these possibilities? Which do you prefer? Or
do you have other ideas that might be even better?
