In case anybody wants to experiment with DocBook 5 (or other) XML technical writing/editing, some free software is available: (1) XMLmind XML Editor Personal Edition <http://www.xmlmind.com/xmleditor/download.shtml> is a very powerful authoring tool which has all the features needed to edit any XML document, whether conforming to a standard schema (DocBook, DITA, XHTML, etc) or to a proprietary one.

You'll like this Personal Edition has no restrictions in terms of schema. DTD, W3C XML Schema, RELAX NG schema and Schematron are all fully supported.

See features for a thorough description of XMLmind XML Editor Personal Edition.

Personal Edition can be freely downloaded.

(2) XMLmind XSL-FO Converter Personal Edition <http://www.xmlmind.com/foconverter/downloadperso.shtml> was designed with two goals in mind:

   * To make evaluation of the conversion engine easier.
   * To provide a convenience for XML content authors who need to
import their documents in Microsoft® Word or OpenOffice Writer.

Personal Edition only provides stand-alone applications. Both the Java^TM and .NET versions provide four command-line executables (fo2rtf, fo2wml, fo2docx and fo2odt), and the Java version offers a graphical user interface (XSL Utility <http://www.xmlmind.com/foconverter/xslutility.html>) as well.

Personal Edition may be freely used by natural persons /for their personal activities/. Except in a few special cases it may not be used for professional activities. (See XMLmind XSL-FO Converter Personal Edition License <http://www.xmlmind.com/foconverter/license_pe.html> for conditions of use.)

Personal Edition is available for download <http://www.xmlmind.com/foconverter/downloadperso.shtml> at no charge.

I plan to use DocBook 5 with the Writer Guide chapters, using the above software packages. In case any others are interested, let me know and we can compare notes.
