Hello,
I wrote to the reCAPTCHA team. You can see their response below. It's
encouraging. They are aware of how hard it is to heard the audio and
they have a plan. They also seem interested in making things work on
Linux. So I gave them a more detailed bug report.
My opinion of reCAPTCHA went up a notch after their response.
Best,
Daniel.

1) It doesn't seem to support Linux. On my Linux box running
Firefox, reCAPTCHA asks me to download a plugin but Firefox can't
find a suitable plugin. I don't know how reCAPTCHA works, but it
fails on Linux+Firefox.
We are Linux users ourselves. There is a link labeled "can't hear the
sound" which points to an MP3 file.
2) The audio version is almost impossible to understand. I have to
replay it several times and even then I only pass the CAPTCHA about
30% of the time.
We're working on a new version of the audio CAPTCHA that will fix these
problems. Many existing audio CAPTCHAs can easily be broken and provide
an avenue for spammers. The new audio CAPTCHA is based on a different
technology than the current one and thus can be made much easier for
humans. It should be out in the next month or two.
