[authors] open a DOC file w/o continual crashing?

A persistent problem here the past three weeks with my Vista 
installation is having my DOC or XLS files open and then crash 
repeatedly after a few seconds. However, if the same files are opened 
and rewritten over with Word or Excel 2007 and then closed, they then 
open OK in OOo. Why should this be?

I uninstalled, cleaned the Registry, and deleted any OOo-related files 
left over after uninstallation some three times, and still this happens.
