I very apologize for sending this email to everyone. First, I am not even sure what this address is intended for because I am that new to the system.

I would love nothing more than to contribute to improving the documentation for OOo, however, I have no idea how to begin. I am guessing this is all done through email, but I don't know where to go to find a project to start or to take over (something to review for editing). I have been to the OOoAuthors website and I simply get lost on that website with the style of organization on it. Does anyone feel like leading a newb by the hand and tell him step-by-step what to do?

Thanks and again I am sorry if this is an inappropriate message for this address,

Your message is not at all inappropriate. We encourage people to ask if they don't understand something on the website. I am sorry to hear you got lost, but I can understand how that happens.

When Andy answered, he didn't know that you already have the Author role.

OK, where to begin? I suggest two things:
1) Read (online) the page "Contribute to the guide", especially the sections on what to look for when reviewing.
http://www.oooauthors.org/english/userguide3/contribute#review

Download and read the _Style Guide_ and _Writing OOo Guides_.
http://www.oooauthors.org/english/userguide3/res3/style_guide_V3.odt/view
http://www.oooauthors.org/english/userguide3/res3/Writing_OOo_Guides_v3.odt/view

2) Look in the Review List, visible (after you log in) below the navigation area in the left-hand column of http://www.oooauthors.org/english Pick one of the English-language documents on that list and click on it. That takes you to the "View" page for that file. Now do two things: (a) Download the .odt file (clicking on its link should start the download process) to your computer. (b) Look in the green bar above the name of the chapter. On the right-hand end is "pending review". Click on this and then click on "retract". That removes the chapter from the review list so other people know you are working on it.

To edit the file:
1) Open it in OpenOffice.org 3.1.1, turn change recording on, and edit as usual.

2) When you are finished, save the file with a new name (add your initials and the date to the filename).

3) In the Navigation bar on the left, go to the Feedback folder for the guide this chapter came from. Choose "add new..." and "file" from the green bar. Fill in the blanks and browse for the file you've just edited. (In that form, the "title" you enter should be a reader-friendly name, not the filename.) Click Save.

4) Send a note to the list to tell us that you have reviewed and uploaded the file.

I hope this helps! Please feel free to ask more questions. We won't yell at you. :-)

Aw! Thank you! Now I feel like I have something to go on. I greatly appreciate the step-by-step approach you gave me.

Thanks again,
Randy
