I think people have been discussing two different things in this thread: 1. the explanation of M4 quoting rules and where quotes are needed or not 2. the style used in the manual I think it's good to have an accurate doc for #1, but that the manual style should be easier to learn from example : quoting each argument once, even when simple. People do not read the manual linearly, so they may miss #1. However they will see random examples in the manual, and infer quoting rules from these. I think it is better if people get the false impression that each argument must be quoted, rather than thinking quoting does not matter or whatever else.
