actually, I found out that my patch was totally bogus: it used as_shell which either have not been set (first expansion) or have not been exported (second expansion). Well, computer time is cheap, people's attention is expensive. Your workaround and Ralf's review of the rest of the Autoconf code made me feel bounded to keep this limitation in my mind when I write future code. I refuse to do that. So I'm going to forget about the bug right now. It's in the best interest of the upcoming release.
