but this construct works only for project which do not use autoheader.
So, I would say your first patch is much better.But I also would say the right way to do this is by resurrecting my old patches to allow m4 lists in AC_CHECK_* (yes, the same patches that started using shell functions and sped up autoconf by 20%...) :-)
