Yes, I think our use of _cv_ variables in many of the existing autoconf macros is unlikely to change without causing major headaches (for example, gnulib inspects ac_cv_func_NAME all over the place to see what happened with AC_CHECK_FUNCS_ONCE), so documenting stable cache variables is a good step.
