Not completely useless.  It means additional work for the maintainer,
but it's not that hard.

foo.o: foo.cc foo.$(CXX_EXT)

.cc.cpp:

.cc.cxx:

I don't think we can expect compilers to support reading from stdin.
GCC, for one, will refuse to read from stdin unless it's just
preprocessing.
