executable suffix 0 ?

Running a configure generated from the current autoconf on HP-UX 10.20
gives me an executable prefix '0'.

This seems to be the result of:

expr conftest : [^.]*\(\..*\)

And I do get the same result from another set of expr's that I tried
it with (including GNU expr (GNU sh-utils 2.0)).
