I installed that version of autoconf and put your script in a file
called "foo":

stenn@porkypine> sh foo
configure: loading cache /dev/null
configure: creating ./config.status
config.status: creating file
config.status: creating header.h
BAR

#define FOO BAR
stenn@porkypine>
