profiling timer expired

Aehm, don't want to disturb but am in trouble with autoconf and/or m4.

When trying to configure some software packages I get the message:

profiling timer expired.

One example happens when configuring autoconf itself:

Making all in m4sugar
make[2]: Entering directory `/workspace/software/system/autoconf-2.57/lib/m4sugar'
../../tests/autom4te                            \
        --language=m4sugar                      \
        --freeze                        \
        --output=m4sugar.m4f
make[2]: *** [m4sugar.m4f] profiling timer expired
make[2]: Leaving directory `/workspace/software/system/autoconf-2.57/lib/m4sugar'
make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/workspace/software/system/autoconf-2.57/lib'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

I see this the first time and don't understand it. Please help.
