I agree with this, configure should not check for the existence of
the directory. (It would be a job for distcheck.)
Moreover, I do not think it makes sense to specify an absolute
directory there.

mistaken comment; the path has to be relative.
(AC_CONFIG_MACRO_DIR): Likewise; moreover, do not check for
the existence of the dir at configure time.
