Of course not. Many applications doesn't mean all applications.
But then I fail to see the point of the macro.
The installation instructions for the supercomputer will then have to be
"use configure --host .... for most configure-script-using programs, but
for programs X, Y, and Z (versions higher than xxx.xxx) you can just use
configure". But then users have two cases to remember instead of one.
If you have to learn to use --host for installing some applications, you
might as well do this for all of them.
