That's of course a political question and I can feel your pain. My
recommendation is to start small, show real benefit from your changes
and if possible do one step at a time building up trust with the main
developer. As soon as you have autoolified the project, gnulib
integration should be fairly easy.

Show him that an autotooled project works very well for the users on
various platforms.
