The bootstrap requirement only exists for autoconf.git; it does not exist for released tarballs. So you break the cycle by installing a new-enough release tarball. wget ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/autoconf/autoconf-2.68.tar.xz # or .gz, if you don't have xz installed unpack that, and install it Yes, bootstrapping an ancient machine can be painful, but do you really plan on developing on that ancient machine?
